Biography

José Miguel Fernández studied music and composition at the University of Chile and at the LIPM (Laboratorio de Investigación y Producción Musical) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He went on to study composition at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon and followed Ircam’s Cursus in composition. He writes instrumental, electroacoustic and mixed music.

His works have been premiered in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania, and he has performed at many international festivals. He was selected for the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition in 2000, and won the Grame-EOC International Composition Competition in Lyon in 2008 and the Giga-Hertz Award of ZKM/EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO in Germany in 2010. In 2014 he was selected by Ircam for its Artistic Research Residency programme, working on interaction in mixed music, and in 2018 for a residency in partnership with the Société des arts technologiques in Montreal, on writing electronics for an audiovisual project.

In 2021 he defended a doctoral thesis in music (research in composition) at Sorbonne Université and Ircam. Within Ircam’s Music Representations team, his research focuses mainly on developing immersive sound diffusion systems, such as connected loudspeakers, as well as software for sound spatialisation and for writing electronics, and tools for creation and interaction in mixed, electroacoustic and multimedia music.
